Salt Lake City Wedding
A Beautiful Week in Salt Lake City
SOMETHING SPECIAL FOR MY FIRST POST ON MY NEW WEBSITE
AS STEPHEN ALEXANDER PHOTOGRAPHY
I know when I say, every wedding is important and special, I get some funny looks from other wedding photographers. The Wedding marks the beginning of a new life long adventure for a couple, family travel from around the globe to attend and it is a special time for each person in attendance to be a support and witness to the new couple.
For me, a wedding is a sacred covenant that should be approached with reverence and serious contemplation. It is a holy ceremony that binds two people to each other and most importantly, it is promise made before God. I always have this thought in mind when I plan out the wedding photography schedule for a couple. I want to leave time for them to reflect and prepare for the ceremony.
This was an extra special wedding for me and my family as the Bride is my youngest daughter's best friend and my daughter would be the Maid of Honor. Our two families have been friends for over 10 years, so I've had the opportunity to see our daughters grow and mature into amazing young woman. This was truly a special day for me, I would have the opportunity to travel to Salt Lake City and photograph in and around Temple Square as well as travel up
"Big Cottonwood Canyon" pass to Silver Lake.
WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY IN SALT LAKE CITY IS INCREDIBLE...
Utah is stunning, it is blessed with an incredible array of beautiful and diverse terrain. The city is both historical and filled with unique modern architecture. The surrounding mountains are an endless canvas of colors and wildlife that you could easily get lost in for weeks looking at all this wonderful part of the country has to offer.
We arrived Wednesday evening and met up with family of the bride and groom and plotted out the next few days of shooting. We decided for the sake of the dress that we would pass on the mountain trails for the bridal portraits on Thursday. We covered most every inch of Temple Square around the Salt Lake City Temple. We spent over 6 hours shooting and I felt like I could have returned the next day and discovered more amazing angles and nooks to shoot this amazing couple in and around.
The first half of Friday we ascended Big Cottonwood pass and trekked around Silver Lake. This is a stunning location for any type of photography. Silver Lake is situated on the central part of the eastern mountain range that encircles Salt Lake City. Plenty of areas to explore and find some privacy away from the tourists circling the lake.
Friday was a casual paced day so we took our time shooting on the edge of the lake as well as just on a short ledge of rocks on the back end of the lake. (watch out for the Moose....seriously)
Friday evening was the bridal shower held at a family members house over looking the valley...wow!
SATURDAY, THE BIG DAY HAS ARRIVED!!
I had to make some serious adjustment to my usual shooting schedule for this wedding since it was at the Salt Lake City, LDS Temple and absolutely no photography is permitted inside the temple during the ceremony. The bride and groom emerge from a designated waiting area where friends and family were waiting to celebrate and cheer on the newlyweds.
Shooting around the temple on a Saturday is a true test of patience and creativity as there are upwards of 40 weddings being performed on any Saturday in August. Each wedding party and guests can number in range from 20 to 100 family and guests. You can imagine that this could make for some chaos, yet everyone is incredibly courteous and respectful of each others celebration.
The reception was held at The Old Meeting House in Salt Lake City where about 120 family and friends spent the evening celebrating this amazing young couple.
I hope you enjoy the photos and if your a couple looking to get married at the Temple or a photographer that needs some tips for shooting around this incredible city, please contact me, I'd love to help you make the most of your time here
*PHOTOGRAPHER NOTE
Do not attempt to shoot a wedding at the Temple in one day!
(now repeat this to yourself about 100 times!)
One reason I was able to stay calm during the Saturday Wedding at the Chapel was I had already spent an entire day with the couple getting intimate and fun photos for the couple on the Thursday before the wedding. We covered the Temple, the Square as well the The Joseph Smith Memorial Bldg and the State Capital Bldg. We ranged around covering several blocks and relocating countless times. We were able to take our time and wait for crowds to move and the light to be just right. Attempting to shoot everything one a single day is a disservice to the couple getting married.
Just my humble suggestion*
